How it all started.....
Gregg purchased 28 acres from his grandfather in 1999 with hopes of raising a family and someday having a farm of his own in the small town of Canterbury, where his family has resided for over 80 years. In 2002, Gregg and Lynsey met at Hank's Dairy Bar and in 2004 they built a house together on the property. They were married in their living room on January 15, 2005 by Lynsey's grandmother and soon after they had a son. Life at that time was fun and hectic, but Gregg still had a desire for some chickens and "just a few cows".
Gregg built a tool shed not too far from the house and while framing Lynsey noticed one bottom piece was framed a little funny. So she asked "Why did you frame the corner like that?" Gregg answered, "for the chicken door!" Lynsey laughed out loud - the closest thing to a farm animal she ever owned was rabbits; growing up in Plainfield life was pretty simple and far from the "farm boy life" Gregg led. But in the spring of 2006 on a trip to Agway the little family saw the chicks and ducklings and that's when it started....with 12 chicks and 6 ducklings, a cage and some feed.
The birds moved out from their "basement brooder" that May and life continued. Gregg constantly talked about getting beef cows and soon began putting up a fence. In August of 2008 three Hereford heifers made their way onto the new pasture and quickly became a part of the family. Now that Gregg had his chickens and his cows, Lynsey suddenly felt the need for her own animals. For no reason at all, goats came to mind! Lynsey had heard of goat milk soap and was interested in trying it out. In April of 2009 she brought home Eloise, a 5 year old Alpine/Nubian doe and her 2 month old wether Junior. Since Gregg had 3 cows, Lynsey needed 3 goats, so Fudgie, an Oberhasli/Nubian doeling, was brought home the next month.
Since 2006, 18 birds have turned into over 40 (at times!), 3 cows have turned into 7, 3 goats have turned into 10 and let's not forget about the indoor pets! Our family has expanded and in September 2012 we welcomed Colton to our family. Lynsey makes soap, lotion and has attempted cheese (which needs some major research!) while Gregg continues to improve the farm by building two cow barns, a small barn for the goats and expanding the cow pasture to include a 6 acre field in the front of the property. Over the years we've seen animals come and go, but our original crew has stuck with us through it all!
From time to time Gregg's grandfather asks, "Lynsey, did you ever think you'd grow up to be a farmer?" To which Gregg replies for Lynsey: "Who knows, but I've created a monster!"
The work never ends, but neither does the joy the family gets as they sit on their back porch with a chiminea fire, watching their farm grow.
