HEALTH CARE AND HOUSING
One of the many great features of the breed is its hardiness. Our cows are allowed to free range on over 10 acres of pastures and woodlands, complete with a stream running through for full access to water. We have split "their turf" into two sections and rotate the cows between the sections to allow the fields some growth time. During the winter months, the cows are kept on a side that contains a 16x24 "carriage-shed" barn to give them an option for shelter during the snowy months. However, even though we provide shelter for them, we still find them hanging out near the back yard in a snow storm picking at the few remaining leaves on the trees.
Hay is provided free choice when the pastures are dead or when it is calving season. We prefer to raise our beef cattle as grass fed; however we will provide grain as a secondary feed if their condition implies it is necessary.
Calves are offered creep feed at an early age, but mostly rely on either mother's milk or powdered formula. There is really nothing we do during calving unless the situation calls for it. We are fortunate that all our girls are "good mothers" and only one required assistance at birth.
